The Last Shift.

Fighting game from the perspective of a fast food customer facing role employee

How could the mechanics and phases of a boss battle be used as metaphors of layers and transformation for Social Commentary about the fast food industry and capitalism?

We've developed intimate relationships with corporate brands and automation while becoming disconnected from actual food sources and genuine human interactions. Fast food chains have perfected systems that prioritize efficiency over authentic experiences, turning eating into a mechanical transaction.

Fighting games and boss battles are uniquely positioned to address these issues because their mechanics of conflict and transformation serve as perfect metaphors for our struggle against dehumanizing systems, revealing different layers of control.

This project explores how boss battle mechanics can function as metaphors for social commentary about the fast food industry and capitalism, using game progression to communicate critique about work ethics, industrialization, and dehumanization in food culture.

Each defeated phase peels back another layer of the system, with environments transforming from corporate branding to the crude truth behind their operations, while characters mutate from appealing mascots into grotesque entities. This work establishes how boss battle phases serve as effective metaphors for examining layered social issues such as capitalism and industrialization, demonstrating that in-game progression, character transformation, and environmental evolution function as powerful tools for social critique.

Illustrations and mixed media effects were made using Photoshop, animated with Toom Boom Harmony, video editing on Adobe Premiere & After Effects, audio editing Adobe Audition, videogame was programmed in Unity (C#)
